The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
